Warehouse Security San Francisco

A warehouse manager in Hunters Point called us last year pretty frustrated. They had been losing inventory for months. Little by little. A box here, a pallet there. They couldn’t figure out if it was happening during the day or overnight. Turns out it was both. And it wasn’t just strangers. Some of it was internal.

That call is more common than you’d think.

Warehouses Are Easy Targets

Warehouses are big. They have a lot of entry points. They store valuable stuff. And they usually don’t have enough people watching all of it at once.

In San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area, warehouse theft is a real problem. The Port of Oakland is right there. Major distribution hubs run through Brisbane, South San Francisco, and the Bayview. There’s a lot of product moving through this area and not all of it makes it to where it’s supposed to go.

We’ve worked with warehouse operators who didn’t think they needed security until something went wrong. After the fact is always more expensive than before it.

What Warehouse Security Looks Like Day to Day

It’s not complicated. You need trained eyes on your property, at the right times, in the right places.

For some warehouses that means a guard at the gate checking who comes in and out. For others it means overnight patrols walking the floor and the perimeter. For bigger operations it might mean multiple guards covering different shifts around the clock.

We figure out what makes sense for your specific setup. A cold storage facility in SoMa has different needs than a logistics hub in the Bayview. We’re not going to sell you more than you need but we’re also going to be straight with you if your current situation has obvious holes in it.

Access Control at the Loading Dock

The loading dock is where most warehouse theft actually happens. Drivers coming and going. Forklifts moving. Shipments being checked in and out. It gets busy and chaotic and when it gets chaotic things disappear.

Having a guard specifically managing loading dock access makes a huge difference. Checking credentials, logging arrivals and departures, making sure only authorized people are in that area. It sounds basic but it stops a lot of problems before they start.

We had a client in Brisbane running a mid size distribution warehouse. They were having issues with drivers hanging around longer than they should after drop offs, wandering into areas they had no business being in. We put one guard on the dock during peak hours and the problem stopped within a week.

Overnight Warehouse Security

Overnight is when warehouses are most vulnerable. Skeleton crew or no crew at all. Lots of dark corners. Easy to get in if nobody is watching.

Our overnight guards do regular patrols, check all entry points, monitor for anything that looks off, and document everything. If something happens they know how to respond and who to call. They’re not just there to be a presence. They’re actually paying attention.

For warehouses in areas like the Bayview, Hunters Point, and parts of SoMa, overnight coverage is something we really recommend. Those neighborhoods have seen a rise in commercial break ins and a visible guard on site is one of the best deterrents you can have.

Dealing With Trespassers and Squatters

This is a San Francisco specific issue that a lot of warehouse operators deal with and don’t really talk about publicly. Unsheltered individuals finding their way onto warehouse properties, especially overnight or on weekends when nobody is around.

It creates liability issues. It creates safety issues. And it’s a sensitive situation that needs to be handled the right way.

Our guards are trained to handle these situations calmly and legally. The goal is always to resolve things without anyone getting hurt and without creating a bigger situation than what was already there. We’ve dealt with this across properties in the Bayview, Potrero Hill, and along the waterfront and we know how to navigate it.

Employee Safety in and Around the Warehouse

Big warehouses can be dangerous places even without any criminal activity. Forklifts moving, heavy equipment, low visibility in certain areas. A security presence helps keep things orderly and makes sure safety protocols are actually being followed.

It also matters for your employees coming and going. Early morning shifts and late night shifts mean people are walking to their cars in the dark. Having a guard present during shift changes makes employees feel safer and reduces the chance of something happening in your parking lot that becomes your problem.

Warehouses We Work With Around the Bay Area

We cover warehouse and industrial properties across San Francisco, South San Francisco, Brisbane, Daly City, Oakland, and the broader East Bay. Within SF we work a lot in the Bayview, Hunters Point, Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and the SoMa industrial corridor.

If your warehouse is somewhere in that zone and you’ve been thinking about getting security set up, or you’ve already had some incidents and need to do something about it, give us a call. We’ll come out, look at the property, and tell you honestly what we think you need.
